Behind the Scenes with the Need The Loo Campaign Team

Here’s a look at some of the things the Need The Loo team have been up to in our mission to improve Coventry’s public toilet access and standards:

  1. Investigating What’s on Offer: We researched current public toilet options in the city centre to better understand gaps in provision, accessibility, and upkeep. We identify what’s working—and what needs urgent improvement.

  2. Listening Campaign & Survey: Through a citywide listening campaign and survey, we’ve heard many different real life experiences with public toilets in Coventry. Your voices were crucial in highlighting both the good and the challenges people face daily. Read all about it here.

  1. Mapping Coventry's Toilets: We welcomed Hayley from PWC, who helped us map the current public loo facilities in the city centre on the Great British Toilet Map. This essential work brings attention to what’s available—and what’s missing. Read all about it here

  1. Gathering Community Insights at Collaboration Station: At Collaboration Station, we hosted a table to hear directly from the community about what should be the “bog standards” for public toilets in Coventry. Your ideas are shaping the future of this campaign! Read all about it here.

  1. Guerilla Signage Action: The team explored existing public toilet signs across the city—and got creative by trying out their own! We wanted to see if clearer, more visible signs would make it easier for people to find toilets when they need them. Read all about it here

  1. Collaborating with Coventry City Council: We’ve also met with Coventry City Council to discuss signage improvements and explore how we can work together to make finding a public toilet easier for everyone. They are investigating potential solutions and will be meeting with us again in the New Year.

What is happening now?

The campaign is making good progress towards the recommendations. We are in talks with different teams at the Council. Building relationships with local organisations and community groups. We have a strong vision that needs more hands and minds!

We are on the lookout for more concerned citizens to join us in raising awareness and fighting for change. If you have skills, time, passion or lived experiences, then get in touch now! needtheloocampaign@gmail.com
